Build a predictable routine. Keep meals, walks, rest, and departures reasonably consistent. Predictability reduces the number of surprises your dog must process.
Use enrichment and puzzle feeders. Offer a safe food puzzle, stuffed rubber toy, or scatter-search before a manageable alone period. Choose something your dog has already used under supervision.
Desensitize departure cues. Pick up keys, put on shoes, then sit down. Repeat until those signals stop predicting a long absence. Practice exits lasting seconds, returning before panic begins.
Create a safe den space. Use a quiet room, open crate, or gated area your dog already chooses for rest. Add familiar bedding and water; never force confinement during panic.
Mask unpredictable noise. Steady calming music, a fan, or white noise can soften hallway sounds, thunder, or fireworks. Start it before the trigger whenever possible.
Exercise before alone-time. A sniff-rich walk plus a few minutes of training can lower restless energy. Avoid exhausting, frantic exercise immediately before departure.
Consult your veterinarian for severe cases. Medication can reduce panic enough for learning to happen. It works best as part of a behavior plan, not as a last-minute substitute for one.
